Palm Beach County public school students and their parents are reaping the benefits of a Boca Raton-based company's labor. Aluminum Solutions Group manufactures and installs aluminum covered walkways that are used to connect portable classrooms to main buildings and provide cover at transportation pickup points.

"It has been an unbelievable blessing for our school. Children avoid inclement weather while waiting for parents, and the wait times have decreased dramatically," said Calusa Elementary School Assistant Principal Chris Wotton.

Aluminum Solutions Group has the contract with the county school system and has installed structures at each of the 154 schools in the district.

"I was in the transportation business for 25 years but decided to shift gears and started this company two years ago," said ASG owner Annie Walker.

ASG designs the walkways at its Boca Raton warehouse and subcontracts the installation to Walker Design and Construction, a company owned by Walker's husband, Lee.

"We've been operating since 1991 and have done jobs ranging in size from $50,000 to well over $1 million," Lee Walker said.

The husband-and-wife duo do more than walkways and recently came up with a creative solution for a Broward County school dealing with lunchroom crowding.

"The cafeteria can seat 400, and Coral Springs High has 2,000 kids. We built an outdoor canopy, and now they can eat outside and can be protected from the elements," Annie Walker said. The structures are built to withstand 150 mph winds, and ASG has patents pending.

"The Walker tube will allow us to move structures, should a school's configuration change," her husband said.

ASG also has installed walkways at Florida Atlantic University and Palm Beach Community College campuses and recently signed a contract with the Broward County School system.

"Students used to have to wade through ankle-deep water to get from portables to main buildings when it poured, and that is unacceptable," Annie Walker said.

There are other benefits, including keeping students healthy, Wotton said.

"Children walking in the pouring rain during a cold front [who] come into an air-conditioned building are very susceptible to illness," the Calusa assistant principal said.
