Lee and Annie Walker of Boca Raton have probably had more to do with roofs and canopies at Palm Beach County schools than any other business people.

Lee has operated Walker Design    Construction for 35 years, and in that time, has worked on the roofs of 140 of the 155 schools in the district. He actually installed the roofs on 43 schools.

To keep up with the demand for covering on walkways, patios other outdoor facilities, Annie Walker formed Aluminum Solutions Group.

   Much of the demand, she said, stems from the district's use of portable classrooms to deal with overcrowding and voter-mandated reduced class size.

   "Many schools have opted to add portables as a way to quickly and cheaply add classroom space," said Annie Walker, president of Aluminum Solutions Group.

   "The state has since mandated that any portable that is expected to (or does) stay as part of the campus for four year.;, must be considered permanent and thus needs protected access to and from those new classrooms. Our aluminum walkway cover system allows schools to integrate those new classrooms attractively and cheaply."

   She said a number of school systems in South Florida have turned to Aluminum Solutions Group to provide covered access ways. One of the reasons, she said, is that the covering; can be taken apart and moved if the portables are either relocated or discarded.

   TIle covered walkways link new classrooms to the main campus while protecting the students from inclement weather and the detrimenial effects of the Florida sun, she said.

   Also, ASG's system is capable of sustaining concentrated loads, severe hailstorms and hurricane winds of up to 150 miles per hour.

   Covered pavilions, she said, also help expand lunchrooms and let schools offer students the opportunity to eat during a nomral range. The use of covered pavilions filled with picnic tables and chairs, she said, can double the seating capacity of a school's lunchroom.

   The same can be done for gymnasium space.
